Resilient : How do you Remain so ?

We’ve all had that moment. You’re in the middle of something important — a call, a text, a map to somewhere unfamiliar — and your phone screen goes black. Out of power. No warning.

The world carries on, but you’re suddenly cut off.

It’s frustrating. But it’s also a reminder: energy is finite.

And not just for our devices. We each run on our own internal charge, spread across four batteries — physical, intellectual, spiritual and social. Some days they all feel full. Other days one is flashing red and pulling the rest down with it.

The key is not waiting for them to run empty.

Physical – The Foundation You Stand On

If one battery matters most in the short term, it’s this one. Your body is the platform every other part of life stands on. You can have the best ideas in the world, but without physical energy, they’ll stay in your head.

Think of the warning signs: the foggy focus when you’ve skipped meals, the irritability after too little sleep, the heavy limbs from sitting still for too long. We’ve all ignored them, telling ourselves we’ll “catch up later.” But you can’t run on empty forever.

Small changes make a difference. Ten minutes of walking between calls. A proper glass of water before you reach for another coffee. Thirty extra minutes in bed instead of one more episode. And rest — real, guilt-free rest — isn’t indulgence. It’s maintenance. It’s how you show up tomorrow ready to do your best work.

Connecting with……..

Intellectual – The Spark That Keeps You Curious

Your intellectual battery isn’t about test scores or qualifications. It’s about curiosity. About keeping your mind open and engaged in a world that constantly tries to scatter your attention.

We live in a storm of pings, scrolls and endless tabs. It’s easy to get to the end of the day having “done” a lot, but having really thought very little. Recharging means slowing the mental churn. It means reading something for the pleasure of it. Learning a skill simply because you want to. Letting yourself follow a question just to see where it goes.

It also means giving your brain space. That might be five minutes of stillness between meetings, or walking without your phone. Like any muscle, your mind grows stronger when it’s both stretched and allowed to recover.

Needing to be stimulated……

Spiritual – Your Inner Compass

This one’s harder to measure, but you know when it’s running low. It’s the sense that life has drifted into autopilot. That the “why” behind your actions has gone fuzzy.

The spiritual battery is about meaning. Not religion necessarily, but connection to something bigger than yourself. It’s the values you live by and the sense of direction they give you. When it’s full, decisions feel lighter. When it’s empty, even simple things feel like a grind.

Recharging here doesn’t need to be grand. It might be a morning journal, a quiet moment in nature, a simple gratitude practice before bed. It might be giving time to causes that matter to you. The question to hold onto is: When do I feel most like myself? The more of those moments you create, the stronger this battery becomes.

Everything is connected …..

Social – The People Who Power You

Humans are wired to belong. Yet in the blur of daily life, it’s easy to confuse being “connected” with being in connection. Your inbox may be overflowing, but that’s not the same as feeling seen, heard and valued.

A healthy social battery comes from real relationships — the people who lift you up, the communities where you contribute and feel part of something bigger. Recharging can be as simple as a shared meal, a phone call with an old friend, or saying yes to an invitation you’d normally decline.

And never underestimate the power of micro-moments. A smile from a stranger, a warm thank-you to a colleague — they may only take seconds, but they leave a trace of energy that lasts far longer.

In my natural Habitat …….

The Interconnection

These four batteries don’t work in isolation. Physical fatigue can dull your curiosity. A lack of connection can weaken your sense of purpose. Feeling adrift can drain your motivation to move or learn.

That’s why it’s worth checking in with yourself. At the end of each day, ask: How charged is each battery? Which one needs attention tomorrow? It’s not about chasing perfect balance — life doesn’t work like that. It’s about noticing before you hit zero, and making small choices that keep you ready for whatever comes next.

Resilience isn’t about never feeling tired, knocked down or stretched thin. It’s about having enough in reserve to recover. To keep going. To face the next challenge with clarity, purpose and connection.

So — which battery could you top up today?

Next Up

Over the next four blogs, I’ll share exactly what I( try to ) do to keep each of these batteries charged.

The small, repeatable habits that make the biggest difference.
The things I’ve learned from both burning out and bouncing back.

We’ll go deeper into the physical, intellectual, spiritual and social — one at a time.
